Use a measured or estimated wall area, then enter your own local paint and labor pricing.

01 / Formula

How this is calculated

Total = rounded gallons × price per gallon + fixed supplies + labor hours × rate

02 / Assumptions

What the estimate assumes

  • Wall area is entered directly; floor area is not silently converted to wall area.
  • Prices and labor time are user supplied.
  • Ceilings, trim, cabinets, repairs, moving furniture, and specialty coatings are separate scopes.

03 / Worked example

See the math in context

At 4,000 sq ft of wall area, two coats, and 375 sq ft/gal, the theoretical quantity is 21.34 gallons before purchase rounding.

04 / Guidance

Build the scope room by room

A whole-home total is most dependable when each room, hall, stairwell, ceiling, and trim package is measured separately, then grouped by coating.

Questions

Frequently asked

Should I round up when buying paint?+

Yes. Paint is sold in fixed container sizes, and a small reserve helps with touch-ups, porous surfaces, and application loss. The calculator shows both the theoretical quantity and a practical purchase amount.

Does paint coverage include two coats?+

Coverage printed on a can is normally stated per coat. Two coats cover the same surface twice, so the calculator multiplies net area by the number of coats before dividing by the selected coverage rate.
